Munir El Haddadi wants to join Morocco

The Moroccan-Spanish has asked the Royal Moroccan Football Federation for support before FIFA to play with the Moroccan national team.

Munir El Haddadi, one of the many notable Moroccan-origin footballers who opted to represent their host countries, has contacted the Royal Moroccan Football Federation asking its support so as to be able to join the Moroccan national team, reported Assabah daily.

The newspaper said that the striker, currently playing for the Spanish club of  Alavés on loan from Barcelona, has also personally contacted the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) requesting their support for “the rights of bi-national players”.

Munir’s debut with Spain

Born to Moroccan parent in the town of San Lorenzo del Escorial near Madrid, Munir debuted with the Spanish national team on September 8, 2014, in a qualifying match for Euro 2016 against Macedonia.

The striker barely played thirteen minutes and has not returned to play for Spain ever since. However, this brief appearance implies, according to FIFA rules, that the striker cannot be called by another selection, despite having made public his desire to change his sports nationality.

2018 World Cup

Munir’s intention appears to be to participate in the World Cup in Russia with Morocco, which on Saturday secured their qualification for the tournament with a 0-2 victory against the Ivory Coast.

The Royal Moroccan Football Federation has already expressed its interest in the incorporation of the striker on several occasions and has repeatedly requested to his Spanish counterpart the remission of the player’s sports passport.

Competition for a position in Morocco’s team

If FIFA grants its approval and Munir manages to join the Lions of the Atlas, he would still have to fight for a position with the attackers that have taken Morocco to the World Cup, including Khalid Boutaïb (top scorer of the team in the qualifiers), the promising Achraf Bencharki, and both  Nordin Amrabat and Hakim Ziyech .

So far this season, Munir has played nine games with Alavés, one of them as a substitute, and has scored one goal.
